Artist Statement
Ghost Fish and Strange Suits follows an office worker lamprey shortly after its death and funeral as it watches its coworkers from beyond the grave, exploring the ordinary life through fantasy creatures who live just like you and me. The ghost lamprey acts much like the audience as it watches the creatures it once worked with from the sidelines, and also an anchoring character in a world of constantly changing
settings and characters who all make up the main cast. It experiences things that once were its everyday life, now separated by death itself. It watches from the sidelines in its own new normal. This work was started shortly after I entered the workforce and got a taste of the “real world” after finishing my education. The changes I had gone through at the time inspired me to keep illustrating this series, it became a small comfort during what felt like an uneasy time. During childhood, I feared the
monotony and routine that I saw out of adult life and the way joining the workforce seemed to sap the life and joy out of people. In making this work, I wanted to create a lighthearted take on the workplace
using my favourite sea creatures and ghosts, a topic that I really enjoy. I also like to think that maybe if
ghosts did exist, they wouldn’t see the world like we do. Maybe everything is a lot more monochrome
for them, like how adult life was described to me growing up.
Artists Bio:
Kian Murray is a multi-media Canadian artist who focuses on exploring reality with fantasy and
whimsical imagery. With a current focus on sea creatures and their inherit otherworldly wonder, their
current aim is to weave ecology with the joy of make-believe.

«Ghost Fish and Strange Suits» suit une lamproie marine et employée de bureau peu après sa mort et ses funérailles alors qu'elle regarde ses collègues de l'au-delà de la tombe. Cette série d'illustrations prosaïques explore la vie ordinaire du monde de l'emploi par le filtre de créatures fantastiques.
Ce travail a commencé peu de temps après mon entrée sur le marché du travail où j'ai eu un avant-goût du « monde réel » après avoir terminé mes études. Les changements que j'avais vécus à l'époque m'ont inspiré à continuer à illustrer cela dans cette série. C'est devenu un petit réconfort pendant ce qui semblait être une période difficile. Pendant mon enfance, je craignais la monotonie et la routine que j'ai vues dans la vie d'adulte et la façon dont le passage à la main-d'oeuvre semblait saper la joie des gens. En faisant ce travail, je voulais prendre un cliché plus ludique du lieu de travail, en utilisant mes créatures marines et mes fantômes préférés, un sujet que j'apprécie vraiment. J'aime aussi penser que peut-être si les fantômes existaient, ils ne verraient pas le monde comme nous. Peut-être que tout est beaucoup plus monochrome pour eux, comme la façon dont la vie d'adulte m'a été décrite en grandissant.

Kian Murray est un artiste canadien multimédia qui se concentre sur l'exploration de la réalité par la voie de l'imagerie fantaisiste. Son objectif actuel est de tisser ensemble l'écologie et la joie qu'on peut ressentir à jouer à faire semblant tout en illuminant d'un regard actuel des créatures marines d'un autre monde.
