A large moon with blue eyeshadow dripping orange tears on gray-filled clouds, a black dog named Tig Tig standing on the waterfront, 18th Century European ladies recently tatted, and the twinkling of a few sprinkled stars over dark blue skies, all part of Samm Pine-Bennett’s graphic universe posted on her Instagram page over the course of the last summers spent with family in Baawaating/Sault Ste Marie.

Samantha graduated in 2020 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Algoma University’s Visual Arts program. During her time at AlgomaU, she worked on a number of important projects in relation to the acknowledging of tens of thousands of unmarked graves at residential schools’ sites in Turtle Island\Canada. Her orange T-shirt campaign “Every Child Matters' which she silk-screened from her design was a significant and important moment for Algoma University’s community. (1)

AlgomaU is on the grounds of the Robinson-Huron Treaty of 1850 and is in the actual building of the former Shingwauk Residential School, its shameful history brought to light by the determination of the Ojibway, Cree, and Metis Nations. (2)

During her BFA, Samm worked in mixed media, photo montages, and installations. Pine-Bennett’s BFA thesis work Shadows of a Broken Earth (2020) expressed the many layers of narratives that inhabit her. Shadows of a Broken Earth recreated “fragmented scenes as a reflection of my time traversing the trails and my thoughts, to invoke a sensation of memory related to a place that exists somewhere between reality (the trails) and my inner self,” she writes. Her impactful work brought her to walk the trails and grounds behind the university where she picked up objects and placed them in her mixed media installation. (Image 1) The European ideals of “The Academy” evidenced in the draping of curtains and fabrics, mixed with branches, broken mirror shards, mediated by projections of photo collages, created a fractured mosaic aggregated into a tableau where the eye traveled frantically from place to place trying to find a place of home and rest.

“Observing the evolution of Samm's gathering of seemingly random objects from the woods adjacent to the Algoma University campus made for a fascinating daily experience each time I came to the studios. I was witness to  everything from fungi, to trash, to even a big fallen tree branch being dragged down into the basement studios. Throughout the school year these gatherings began to transform into an installation that was nothing short of magical. The spontaneity of Samm's process, much like her own nature, made for new surprises each day,” writes Hilary Evans, a former student colleague, a painter, and community arts leader.

In When Thoughts Fray and Words Fail Samm Pine-Bennett operates within an instinctual layering of emotions and senses in her series of bold gestural and graphic line drawings and in small reclaimed prints that she transformed to fit her imaginaire.

The modifications that Samm is making to the images represents a metamorphosis of European ideals of beauty into new figures infused with inner power originating from the strong cultural and familial environment of Baawaating where Samm lives. This primal voice, like an old song oozes and gushes out to be heard through Samm’s hands. Inside her bold and assured lines, there lives a sense of a self-reclaiming occurring, a new theatrical staging. “I’d stare at these images and I wanted to sprinkle these figures of a woman leaning on a window sill, a woman reading, with magic and mystical, celestial skies.”

It is very satisfying to see the transformation of vintage frames from the 80’s and 90’s being re-appropriated to fit Samm’s mindscape which can be at times humouristic, at times dark, but mostly very touching, gritty, intellectual, slick and compelling. 

For the past year and a half, Samantha Pine-Bennett has also been working in community outreach with Thinking Rock Community Arts, a vibrant arts organization in Thessalon.

Une large lune portant du fard à paupière bleu d’où coulent des larmes orange traversant un ciel de nuages gris, un petit chien noir appelé Tig Tig se tenant près du bord d’une rivière, des femmes européennes du 18e siècle récemment tatouées et le scintillement de quelques étoiles saupoudrées sur un ciel bleu foncé, tout cela fait partie de l'univers graphique de Samm Pine-Bennett publié sur sa page Instagram au cours des derniers étés passés en famille à Baawaating/Sault Ste Marie. 

Samantha a obtenu un baccalauréat en beaux-arts du programme d'arts visuels de l'Université Algoma en 2020. Durant ces années passées à AlgomaU, elle a travaillé sur un certain nombre de projets importants liés à la reconnaissance de dizaines de milliers de fosses anonymes sur les sites des pensionnats à Turtle Island\Canada. Sa campagne de t-shirts orange « Every Child Matters », qu'elle a sérigraphié à partir de son dessin, a été un moment significatif et important pour la communauté de l'Université Algoma. (1)

Au cours de son BFA, Samm a travaillé dans les médias mixtes, les montages photo et les installations. Dans son travail de thèse de BFA, Shadows of a Broken Earth (2020) Pine-Bennett a exprimé la multitude de récits qui l'habitent. Shadows of a Broken Earth a recréé "des scènes fragmentées comme un reflet de ce temps traversant les sentiers et mes pensées, pour invoquer une sensation de mémoire liée à un lieu qui existe quelque part entre la réalité (les sentiers) et mon moi intérieur", écrit-elle. Son travail percutant l'a amenée à parcourir les sentiers et les terrains derrière l'université où elle a ramassé des objets et les a placés dans son installation multimédia. (Image 1)

Les idéaux européens de "l'Académie européenne" mis en évidence dans le drapage des rideaux et des tissus, mélangés à des branches, des éclats de miroir brisés, médiatisés par des projections de collages de photos, ont créé une mosaïque fracturée agrégée en un tableau où l'œil voyageait frénétiquement d'un endroit à l'autre en essayant de trouver un chez-soi et du repos. 

« Observer l'évolution du rassemblement d'objets apparemment aléatoires de Samm dans les bois adjacents au campus de l'Université Algoma a été une expérience quotidienne fascinante chaque fois que je suis venue aux studios. J'ai été témoin de tout, des champignons aux déchets, en passant par une grosse branche d'arbre tombée traînée dans les studios du sous-sol. Tout au long de l'année scolaire, ces rassemblements ont commencé à se transformer en une installation tout simplement magique. La spontanéité du processus de Samm, tout comme sa propre nature, a créé de nouvelles surprises chaque jour », écrit Hilary Evans, une ancienne collègue étudiante, peintre et leader des arts communautaires. 

Dans When Thoughts Fray and Words Fail, Samm Pine-Bennett opère dans une superposition instinctive d'émotions et de sens dans sa série de dessins au trait gestuels et graphiques audacieux et dans de petits cadres de reproductions récupérés qu'elle a transformés pour les adapter à son imaginaire.

Les modifications que Samm apporte aux images représentent une métamorphose des idéaux de beauté européens en de nouvelles figures imprégnées d'une puissance intérieure provenant de l'environnement culturel et familial fort de Baawaating où vit Samm. Cette voix primale, comme une vieille chanson jaillit pour être entendue à travers les mains de Samm. À l'intérieur de ses lignes audacieuses et assurées, il y a un sentiment d'auto-revendication, une nouvelle mise en scène théâtrale. "Je regardais ces images et je voulais parsemer ces figures de femme accoudée à un rebord de fenêtre, de femme lisant, de ciels magiques et mystiques, célestes."

Il est très satisfaisant de voir la transformation des cadres vintage des années 80 et 90 être réappropriés pour s'adapter au paysage mental de Samm qui peut être parfois humoristique, parfois sombre, mais surtout très touchant, granuleux, intellectuel, et convaincant. 

Au cours de la dernière année et demie, Samantha Pine-Bennett a également travaillé dans le domaine des arts engagés communautaires avec Thinking Rock Community Arts, une organisation artistique dynamique de Thessalon.
