When I see you, I see myself
Northern Ontario based Anishinaabe Visual Artist, Ray Fox, works with a variety of themes in his practice such as memory, cultural and geographic identity, relationship to land, animals, and plant life. He started drawing as a child, raised within a family of many other Manitoulin Island-based Visual Artists. He graduated from the BealART program in London, Ontario. He then went on to study Drawing and Painting at OCAD University in Toronto, Ontario. Since moving back to Northern Ontario, he has been mainly producing work with graphite and charcoal drawings. Painting and printmaking is also part of his practice.
Ray Fox, artiste visuel anishinaabe basé dans le nord de l'Ontario, travaille sur une variété de thèmes dans sa pratique, tels que la mémoire, l'identité culturelle et géographique, la relation avec la terre, les animaux et la vie végétale. Il a commencé à dessiner dès son enfance, élevé au sein d'une famille composée de nombreux autres artistes visuels de l'île Manitoulin. Il est diplômé du programme BealART à London, en Ontario. Il a ensuite étudié le dessin et la peinture à l'Université OCAD de Toronto, en Ontario. Depuis son retour dans le nord de l'Ontario, il produit principalement des dessins au graphite et au fusain. La peinture et la gravure font également partie de sa pratique.

At first glance, the charcoal shapes on white paper appear as dark biomorphic forms resembling maps or burnt wood. Upon closer examination, plant life is revealed in the surroundings of what appears like dark veiled shapes. It is after a few seconds yet that the brain makes sense of what the eyes are perceiving. Water flowing out from the snow. Only parts of it peaking through a carpet of snow, in black patches. Ray Fox has summoned the calm of the forest to paper with his masterful series of charcoal drawings. Like veins flooding with life underneath the ground, the drawings almost appear to sing from the page.
Au premier abord, les formes au fusain sur papier blanc apparaissent comme des silhouettes biomorphiques sombres, évoquant des cartes ou du bois brûlé. En y regardant de plus près, on distingue la vie végétale qui entoure ces formes d'apparence voilée. Il faut encore quelques secondes pour que le cerveau comprenne ce que les yeux perçoivent : l'eau qui jaillit de la neige. Seules quelques gouttes, par endroits, apparaissent à travers un tapis de neige, formant des taches noires. Avec sa magistrale série de dessins au fusain, Ray Fox a su capturer la sérénité de la forêt sur le papier. Telles des veines gorgées de vie sous terre, les dessins semblent presque vibrer au rythme de la page.
